Normally, a tourbillon cage carries the escape wheel, lever, link and balance, and the pinion of link the escape wheel engages with the teeth of a fixed link (non-turning) fourth wheel. The cage is propelled by the going train, and as it turns, the escape wheel rotates against the teeth of the fixed fourth wheel and in turn, passes energy on to the lever and the balance.
